The chocolate Santa is always a crowd pleaser at Christmas, just like other favorite seasonal chocolates: from gold-wrapped baubles for the holiday tree and colorful Easter bunnies to ghoulish Halloween treats, and red-wrapped Valentine hearts. Aluminum foil for the confectionery sector comes in two main forms. The first is a soft, malleable foil, made from alloys with high content of pure aluminum. It is ideal for holding a tight wrap around three-dimensional shapes like seasonal chocolates and pralines. The second is a thicker, stiffer foil made of an aluminum alloy that is more suited to deep-drawing production. It is engineered to maintain its integrity even when elongated or stretched and is used to produce wrappers for hollow chocolate figures, chocolate coins, and other formed chocolate products.
Chocolate is a highly aromatic, sensitive product that puts any packaging material to the test, and the aluminum foil solutions from Constantia Flexibles pass with flying colors. In addition to being recycling-ready, our foils offer optimum barrier properties that prevent contamination and maintain product quality – even at very thin gauges. Sustainability is a factor here as well: full barrier protection increases shelf life and thereby prevents food waste, while thin-gauge foils save valuable natural resources.
Two recent innovations have strengthened Constantia Flexibles’ position at the forefront of confectionery packaging. The first is an innovative wrapper for chocolate Easter bunnies. The previous soft foil wrappers required a heat seal lacquer applied across the entire foil. Our new innovative technique produces a more rigid wrapper in two halves with deep drawing technology. This means that the heat seal lacquer has to be applied at the rim of the two halves only, which requires less lacquer – and therefore fewer resources – and still fully complies with food safety regulations to prevent migration. The second is an innovative foil with soft-touch haptics developed for a confectionery project. The wrapper has a unique silky effect thanks to the specialty lacquers we used on our signature confectionery foil.
